Marcus Williams: Lights
Camera ACTION by Asya Proctor ENGL 336
19 year old, D.C native Marcus
Williams has always dreamt of becoming a director.Williams is
a Mass
Communication major at Frostburg State University. Some of his favorite classes include
video production and English, which allowed him to write and think critically
strong tools used to formulate creative ideas. When outside of the class room he
finds different spots around campus to sit and write, “It’s like each spot has
a different influence for a story or an idea” Marcus explains.
He believes that subject matter and visual design are very important to him and for that inspiration traveling around the world is a desired aspect to his career.

New York and
Houston, Texas are two cities that the aspiring filmmaker would settle in and start to
chase his dreams after graduating from Frostburg State in 2019.
When asked, what words
would he use to describe himself he said open-minded and laid back.
Marcus is a dreamer and observer,
“I would listen to music and day dream; I’d basically design my own music video in my head” Williams says.

Music is only one
of the concepts that inspired Marcus to want to become a film director.
Marcus's favorite
director is Hype Williams; they both share a love for visual aestheticism.
Also, his love for
film ranges in different genres from comedy, animation and documentary films. The
Television network VICELAND has had an influence on Marcus's love for informational
and documentary style film work.
When asked his opinion on African Americans in the film industry and how they are perceived in
the film industry today.
He replied
“I think it's a
better time for black people in the film industry, it's not nearly as much
marginalization of actors & characters as they're have been before but I
wouldn't say black actors are completely free of token roles, meaning that they
play he same role in every single movie".
His view on how his films will change
that.
"In order to change that, all that's needed is diverse roles within the black community- characters that aren't really portrayed as well as characters that may change and grow through the film."

In 15 years Williams sees his self working in the film industry, either married or engaged with kids who will love the art of film just as he does.
