Mason’s 9 Month Break from College: for Better or for Worse? By Lisa Wray, ENGL 336

Mason on the back of his 5 year old 2008 Toyota Tacoma

Arthur Mason Weatherholt is a junior transfer from Allegany College of Maryland who took an impromptu 9 month break this past summer and fall after three and a half years of being part of the multimedia program at Allegany, with a focus on photo, video, and audio production. “My initial reaction was ‘Oh my god, what have I done?’ I could’ve put in a really hard semester of work.” he said admittedly, but in hindsight Weatherholt said “I needed a break for me, not for anyone else.” It has become a national trend for college students to take breaks, or what researchers call a “gap year”, defined by the Gap Year Association as "An experiential semester or year…in order to deepen practical, professional, and personal awareness." Although Weatherholt’s time away from the classroom was limited to 9 months, not the typical twelve, he owns it. It’s all documented here

Initially, he worked at Puccini, a pizzeria in east Cumberland, and was able to save enough money to buy new camera gear and a new computer. From there on out, Weatherholt was able to dedicate more time to his photography and get a level of experiential learning he never would have gotten in the classroom. Whether it be the first ever Allegany County Fairgrounds RallyCross debut or a Sunday road trip with some old friends, Weatherholt had his Nikon D3200 in hand. “I like candid photos…I do it for the experience, not money. If someone gets a cool photo that makes them smile, I’m all for it.” Alexandra, Weatherholt’s girlfriend says, “If I had to describe Mason in one word, it would be adventurous.” When he wasn’t busy photographing someone else’s tuck, Weatherholt was taking pictures of his 2008 Toyota Tacoma which he has owned for over five years. Only those who have driven with him will know of his collection of Velcro patches that line to roof of his truck. The collection currently stands at 134 patches with an all-time favorite being a “…sunflower that my girlfriend gave me in November…” Weatherholt says with a smile. So far Weatherholt likes Frostburg State University and said “At first [the break] was a bad thing, [but] I’m happy where I’m at.” He concludes.

She has been his rock his entire life by always being there for him and being consistently supportive. Even when he had a devastating accident when playing high school basketball, he mom was there to lend him her love and care. The accident look place amidst a basketball game and caused part of his knee to break apart and was immediately rushed to the hospital for surgery. Eli wore a cast for 6 months, which was a detriment towards his lifestyle he was living before because he wasn't able to play sports or be as proactive as he normally is. With a logical progression, Eli wishes to be a social media manager or become a radio voice to have fun with life while also giving himself a purpose by doing what he enjoys. His language based job pursuits stem from Eli his current interest in social media and enjoyment in conversation. The job itself is intriguing because he desires a role in which to be apart of the main of the social parts of society. As open as he is in conversation, Eli also is open with his music selection. "I listen to everything," he exclaims, "I get tired of listening to one genre so I need to switch it up sometimes." He also plays video games like Call of Duty, Battlefield and Fortnite. Fornite is his favorite game at the moment because it's a new, innovative concept in the realm of video games. To wrap things up, Eli likes to keep things simple by his favorite food being a burger. And, if given the choice, the burger is preferred to be medium well. "I don't like drinking blood," he states as I give him a wandering look of contempt of his life choices. Just kidding, he just doesn't like he eating raw meat; he didn't say that.

Tiana Buentello and Her Travels Across America

Tiana Buentello is a freshman at Frostburg State University. Her major is Mass Communication with a concentration in Journalism. Before enrolling, she and her family have moved to many different places throughout the United States. She was born in California, in the city of San Luis Obispo. Throughout her life, she has lived in her previously mentioned hometown to the age of eight, then lived on Frostburg until the age of thirteen. After that, she spent a few years living in Lexington, Kentucky, then a few in Ridgley, West Virginia, before moving back to Frostburg again to finish high school at Mountain Ridge. The reason why she and her family move so often, according to her, is because they enjoy experiencing a change of scenery every now and then. When asked about her travels, she had this to say:"I think it really shapes me into who I am, and gave me a lot of positive experiences. I got to see a lot different types of place in the country."
In addition to living in many difference places, Tiana and her family have traveled all over the country as well, visiting many different places. The most memorable places to her include Colorado, Chicago, and Los Angeles. Tiana says her favorite place is California because of the beaches, relaxed atmosphere, variety of things to do out there, and the fact that she still has a lot of family from there. Her father is from California, but her mother is from Allegany county, and the two met when her mother went to California in pursuit of higher education. Tiana says that, although she has enjoyed all of the places she’s been to, she longs for California the most.
Tiana hopes to one day start a career in creative writing, though she does not have anything specific in mind yet. She particularly enjoys poetry, specifically short poetry, and her favorite poet is Rupi Kaur. Besides writing, Tiana’s hobbies encompass various fields of arts and creativity. Among these hobbies include photography and painting, though she has not published any work as of yet. She has an account on Instagram, and anyone interested in viewing her posts there can see them here: https://www.instagram.com/99.clouds/

What If

What If
By Tiana Buentello, ENGL 336

William Everett, a Senior at Frostburg State University majoring in English, with a concentration in creative writing, chose Frostburg as his school after visiting the campus for summer programs including Upward Bound and having an alumni within his family.
William moved to Barton, MD from Silver Spring, MD when he was only one because his parents wanted a change from the city. William graduated from Mountain Ridge High School in Frostburg with the class of 2014. In addition to majoring in English, he is minoring in Graphic Design. The classes that he enjoys most include Creative Writing, Linguistics, Psychology, and Painting. He is also currently the secretary of the Super Smash Brothers Club and writes under entertainment for the newspaper on campus, "The Bottom Line."
Outside of class, William enjoys playing games on his Xbox like Destiny and says that one of his favorite games is Pokémon Mystery Dungeon on the Nintendo DS. He is passionate about writing, and writes creative short stories. “I think that what I enjoy most about writing is being able to create. Taking something you enjoy, which in my case is fiction and storytelling, and being able to make my own version of it, feels empowering, wonderful. I typically draw inspiration for my writing from daydreams and hypotheticals. I'll look at something I've witnessed or experienced, and think to myself, What if?"
Fantasy is his favorite genre to write about, because it allows for the most creative freedom and lets you use your imagination too. “I don't think there was a definite point where I sat down and said to myself ‘I really like writing,’ I think it's something that I got into over time, out of a desire to create. Gaming has always been my favorite hobby, and my favorite games are always ones where I can create things, express myself. I've come to realize that writing is the ultimate form of creative expression.”
William says that after graduation he would possibly like to continue his education and attend graduate school for creative writing. In ten years he says he would maybe like to move away to Seattle, one of the reasons being that it is near Microsoft, and he is interested in a career in video game/software design. He is also interested in pursuing journalistic writing relating to gaming as a career path, using his education and talent in writing wherever he decides to go.

Keen and Kind Hearted the Story of Kaitlynn By LaRon Richardson ENGL 336

This past Tuesday, February 21, 2018, Kaitlynn Hamby had the unique pleasure to be interviewed. You can tell a lot about her character before even speaking to her; she came to the interview with a glowing smile on her face, wearing a bright white summer dress, coral ballerina slippers and long blonde hair reaching down to her shoulders. Kaitlynn is a 19-year-old sophomore English student born and raised in Baltimore County, Maryland. She was raised by both her mother and her father, she has one sibling, a younger brother, but if you ask her she also has a sister. That is because she has a cousin named Becca that looks identical to her. Kaitlynn says “whenever we are in the mall together someone always asks if we're twins...it never fails at this point we just go along with it”. Kaitlynn’s hobbies include hanging out with friends, reading books, listening to music, watching Netflix and going out to eat. She says “ well my favorite meal on campus are the crab cakes from Grill Nation, well they are pretty crumby compared to the ones back in Baltimore but hey…hey crab is crab”. Kaitlynn was always a big talker from a young age, “my parents said I used to sit in booths with random people at restaurants and just start talking…they would literally have to drag me away”.
After graduation Kaitlynn's career ambition is to work in the publishing industry” my dream job would be to work in a publishing house because literally all I have to do is read all day, I would love it by the way my favorite book ever is The host by Stephanie Meyer!” She also prides herself on being loving and caring towards her friends and family. Just this past week Kaitlynn went out of her way to buy 3 of her friends without valentine’s chocolates and to be their valentines. She explains “it was just something nice I would want to do for them, everybody secretly feels a little down around this time if they have no valentines so I made sure to show them some of my love”. Kaitlynn Hamby loves the minuscule about her about her life and makes sure everyone she meets also feels her love.

Danielle Smith, A Girl with Family Values who Values Family

Danielle Smith, A Girl with Family Values who Values Family
By: Malorie Wolfe, English 336
On the brink of graduation, twenty-two-year-old Danielle Smith is ready for the world with a smile. As her time being a college student comes to an end, she beams about being able to give advice as a fifth-year student who has been “down the hills” of Frostburg once or a hundred times. Asked about the most interesting thing to happen to her at Frostburg State, she said it would have to be becoming the person people go to for advice from class courses to relationship problems.  “I’d say I’m the wise elder, I like helping out people and being able to give advice to them.” When asked if she herself had any concerns about the future post-graduation she may need advice about, she shrugged with a smile and replied “Not really.” One thing Danielle said she has really gained from her life thus far, especially in her years as a college student, was her confidence. She said, “I’ve come to terms I’m a dorky, fun person. That is who I am and that is who I love being. I’m not afraid to be myself.” Her “Be who you are,” mantra was especially admiring, and another thing found to be admiring was the way she lit up when she began talking about her family. Though her hometown is a few hours away in Pasadena, Maryland, Danielle will often trip home to spend time with her family, something she holds dear to her heart. On her trips home, she can be found singing/dancing along with her music or using the alone time to plot future writing. If offered her dream job across the world, she would turn it down because it would mean not being around her family. Memories often looked back upon are her family dinners growing up and the shared teasing between her and her brother towards her mother. Danielle erupted in giggles and said “I can remember every time my mom saying ‘Someone hit the lights’ my brother would smack the light switch and say ‘I hit the light!’” College students often take time with their family for granted once they leave the nest and adjust to life on their own, but the magical thing that really does make Danielle a wise elder is she appreciates and values the time spent with her loved ones, and never takes one moment with them for granted.

The Facets of LaRon

The Facets of LaRon
By: Kaitlynn Hamby, ENGL 336
LaRon is from Prince George’s County, where he and his older brother were raised by his parents. His parents are not only still together today, but they were also high school sweethearts. His brother is four years older than he is. LaRon was raised as a Christian, and continues to practice those beliefs today.
A long time ago, he was a linebacker on a football team and he still remains interested in sports, especially football, to this day. Even though he enjoys football, he is not on the school football team because it has been a long time since he played. He has been to a few professional football games. The last time he went to a game, he saw the Redskins beat the Bears in 2013. His other favorite sport is basketball; he is a Cavs fan. He enjoys watching basketball and football, but he does not enjoy hockey or baseball. He enjoys going out with his friends, but he is not outgoing with new people.
His favorite candy is lemonheads, his favorite junk food is cool ranch Doritos, and his two favorite foods are beef stew and rice. He prefers Coke to Pepsi. His favorite vacation was a trip to Cancun when he was 12. This vacation was his favorite because there was all you can eat food, he could order room service whenever he wanted, they were provided a golf cart, and it was an overall nice environment. When he was younger, his favorite subject in school was English because it was the easiest for him. His favorite movie genre is rap, and some of his favorite artists are Kanye, Drake, and Eminem. His favorite color is blue and his favorite art form is photography. His favorite TV show as a kid was Naruto, and his favorite TV show now is How To Get Away With Murder. His favorite movie genre is comedy, especially 21 Jump Street, and he enjoys eating chocolate chip cookies while watching it.
There are plenty of other interesting tidbits of information about LaRon, such as: if he were forced to dye his hair, he would dye it blonde. Although he loves rap music, he occasionally listens to pop music and finds that embarrassing. If he were going to travel anywhere in the world, he would go to Paris because he thinks it looks interesting, and there are a lot of things to do there, such as visiting monuments. If he ever became President, the first thing he would do is find a way to increase job availability. If he ever got arrested, it would probably be for speeding. He’s been to a Drake concert. If he could give his younger self any advice it would be: “just do it; take the risk”. He’s a city person, and his idea of the perfect weekend is having fun with friends while still having time to relax. Finally, he gave up his interest in fashion because it was getting too expensive. When first asked what the best thing to ever happen to him was, he originally replied that he couldn’t currently think of anything, but after a moment, he decided getting a car was the best thing to ever happen to him.
LaRon is majoring in Mass Communication and enjoys Marketing in particular. In five years, he pictures himself with a job in marketing; working a lot and helping his family.

Oz and his Art of being Selfless

Elijah Lynch
English 336
Classmate Profile Assignment

Oz is a Junior at Frostburg State University coming from Howard Community College. Oz has one blood brother that is 2 years older than him. He is a very quirky type of person, but tends to keep things to himself . Coming to Frostburg was quite an easy decision for Oz. He was looking to become more independent as a person and, "Frostburg was the farthest from home but still in the states." He felt it was time to do things on his own especially when going into his Junior year. Oz has a very comfortable look to him. He dresses very casually with a t shirt and jeans and wears glasses.

Along with playing chess, beat-boxing and playing video games as his hobbies, Oz also meditates. He spends countless time thinking deeply and focusing on his mind.  He explained that, "if you want to understand your mind, sit down and listen to it". Meditating is not for everyone, he explained. Your mind has to be trained a certain way for you to fully relax and really take time to slow down your thinking.  He spends too much of his time overthinking and says, "I tend to think too much and not do which needs to change". Oz also takes cold showers at times. He says, "it takes some getting used to but it much better for your body and mind in the end". Oz is not a confrontational person at all and is seen as a very chill and calm guy you can talk to. Even when describing his favorite season of the year he explained, "I like Spring because of the weather but also the transition between Winter and Spring because of the colors". Oz is mastering the art of being selfless.

Brandon Harrington, the up-and-coming director you should be keeping an eye on

Brandon Harrington, junior at Frostburg State, is one cool cat.  He claims to have a strong sense of fashion - and he can back this up, with his current Forever 21 ripped denim jacket with a white t-shirt combo, he's sure to turn heads.  However, there's more than just a snappy dresser: this cat wants to direct.

"I really like movies, I want to be a film director" says Brandon.  Inspired by films like like Kill Bill Volume 1 and Invasion of the Body Snatchers (the original one), Brandon has been going for a Mass Communications major.  "My focus is video, of course, and I have a minor in journalism."

Brandon already has two credits under his belt for his classwork, his first class creation was a music video.  Sadly, it can't be shared: "It isn't anywhere, it's not 'my song' or anything."  He also got to make a documentary about his dorms at the end of the last semester.

Brandon has a preference for Scifi and Horror films, but when asked about which movies he disliked, his answer was swift.  "Romance: I cannot watch romance or dramatic movies like that.  It just doesn't really draw my attention.  I don't need explosions or action scenes all the time, I just don't like romance."

Also on the list of films he didn't enjoy are most documentaries that aren't Planet Earth, which can be "a bit dry" and The Human Centipede. "I really like gory movies, but that one was just too far."

Alex LaFemina, The Nostalgia king

Alex LaFemina, The Nostalgia king
By: Brandon Harrington, ENGL 336

Alex LaFemina is a History major at Frostburg State University. He dresses casually and relaxed like today, he had on a black t-shirt, jeans and sneakers. He also wears glasses. Alex is an open and honest person and has quite a sense of humor, “I like bad things; bad movies, songs and sharing the sense of discomfort.” He also laughed when he said that his last name LaFemina was Italian for “the woman.” Anything that’s vintage is an influence in Alex’s life. He explained that he loves old films, music, clothes and even old video games. He expressed how the most influential film to him was a 1997 Japanese anime called “Princess Mononoke” written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki. “I saw it when I was 8. My parents took me to this art theater and it was the first movie I saw that felt like a piece of art.” He then attempted to do a plot summary of the film, “It’s about… I haven’t seen it in a while. There’s a spirit that has its head cut off and people are trying to use it for eternal life, but the spirit could destroy the world.” Here's a link to the film's trailer here.

Alex has many other hobbies and interests like playing video games and spending “Too much time on YouTube.” Alex prefers RPGs (Role-Playing Games) and playing Minecraft. He didn’t mind sharing that he still plays games on his PlayStation 2 because he can’t afford to get a newer model but he’s content with what he has. That even goes for his clothes, “You get good things at Goodwill”, he said. Alex also explained how he likes old, bad movies aside from “Princess Mononoke.” “I think I like science fiction and fantasy. I don’t usually watch a lot of newer movies, I don’t have time to go to the theater. He hates sitcoms, “I don’t get along with sitcoms, I don’t like watching them because the problems are made by themselves. I hate high school sitcoms, or anything set in high school, but I do like “Heathers.” Nostalgia is a lifestyle for Alex LaFemina.
