Frostburg State Field Hockey earned a 4-0 shut out on
Saturday, September 17 against the Virginia Wesleyan Marlins.
The Frostburg State win started out with three goals in the
first half that led the Bobcats to have a solid lead going in to half
time. The Bobcats were able to find the
back of the net again in the second half solidifying their shut out win.
“We drove six hours for this game. Let’s make it worth it”, said senior Taylor
Bowen. The team has a motto that the
chant before every game that lets everyone know they are there to win. “N.W.N.A. on three!”, chants junior Ivy
Meissner. This chant means “Nothing
Wasted, Never Alone.”
As the team huddled together before the game they agreed to
score within the first two minutes of the game, and sure enough they held to
it. Sophomore Lindsay Gardiner found the
back of the net at the 1:41 mark.
They then took 2-0 lead when freshman Meghan Hughes found
the back of the net off of a penalty stroke at 9:16. This was Hughes’ second goal of the season.
Sophomore Erin Barker gave the 3-0 lead when she found
scored nearly 15 minutes later at the 24:37 mark in the first half. Junior Ivy Meissner earned the assisted on
the Barker goal.
Seniors Taylor Bowen and Jacquelyn Nava combined for
the fourth and final goal of the game as Bowen passed to Nava who then scored.
Frostburg outshot Virginia Wesleyan 22-7
including 14 shots in the first half.
The Bobcats also had six penalty corners during the game.
Senior goalkeeper Jacqueline Gover made five
saves in just over 60 minutes of action.
This earned Gover her third win of the season. Freshman goalkeeper Sierra Smizer took the goal
for the last bit of the game.
With this win the Bobcats improve to have a 3-2 record
overall. Frostburg State returns to
action on Monday, September 20 against Notre Dame (Md.) at 7 pm.
