Holly Thompson Was Given Hope In The Back Of A Taxi Cab.

Holly Thompson Was Given Hope In The Back Of A Taxi Cab.

By Kim Goldberg, ENLG 336

“There is no way for me to know where my birth parents are, I was left in a taxi and became an orphan.” – Holly Thompson.

Now in her second year at Frostburg State University, English major Holly Thompson reflects on her journey as an orphan and how different her life would have been if she had not been adopted.

Zhou Bingdi, Holly Thompson’s birth name, was left in the back of a taxi cab when she was just a baby. Upon the discovery of her abandonment, she was taken to an orphanage. Due to her circumstances, her real birthday and age will never be known. Instead, doctors estimated her age and assigned her a birthday, December 17th 1996, the day she was found. When Zhou Bingdi was presumably eighteen months old, she was adopted by an American family and brought back to the United States. Mr. Thompson traveled to China with a group of fellow American families also adopting children from China. While in China, Mr. Thompson encountered some difficulties with the adoption, at which time Zhou Bingdi also contracted chicken pox, thus causing Mr. Thompson to extend his stay in China. Eventually, Mr. Thompson and Zhou Bingdi were able to come back to the U.S. and join the rest of the family.

The Thompson’s decided to change Zhou Bingdi’s name to Holly Bingdi Thompson. Thompson's adopted parents already had a daughter older than Holly, but were not able to have any more children, fueling their decision to adopt. They had always had a specific interest in helping out children from foreign countries like China. Thompson attended, Hickory Elementary in Harford County, a predominantly Caucasian elementary school and recalls being picked on because she looked different from her family, “When I was little I didn’t like being ‘THE’ Asian at an all-white school." Thompson says that, even though she was picked on, she was grateful to have been adopted by the Thompsons because it gave her a promising life style she “would never have had if [she] had stayed in China." Growing up, Thompson was told she was adopted, but she says she knew this from the start, “It wasn’t like I woke up one day and looked in the mirror and said; wait a second, I’m different. I always knew."

When telling her story, Thompson is not filled with anger or remorse but rather curiosity. Thompson believes she was left in the taxi because she was a female child in China at a time when having a girl was frowned upon. She also speculates that being given up for adoption could have been due to the fact that Chinese families were only permitted to have two children, and Thompson may have been the third child in her original family. She is curious to know about her real parents and hopes to find them someday. She also wants to learn more about her Chinese heritage and hopes to visit China and teach herself the language.

Thompson's adoption has influenced her political interest as well as her personal life. Thompson hopes Ben Carson will win the election because of the special connection she has with him. “As a baby, when you are in the orphanage you don’t get held as much and you develop a flat spot on your head," Thompson said. As a result of her “flat spot”, she was taken to the doctor to be checked out. Her doctor at the time was Ben Carson. Thompson has always been interested in presidential elections but is now a dedicated follower of the elections because of her personal connection with the candidate. “How cool would it be if Ben Carson, the doctor who held me as a baby, became president!” she said. Because she was adopted, Thompson said she too would want to adopt in the future and help give another child from China a similar opportunity for a better future.

Classmate Profile: Madie Wilson
By: Kelley Waidley

Madie Wilson, a Cumberland native and senior at Frostburg State University, is currently finishing her degree in history with a minor in journalism.  She has distinguished herself among the student body as both the President of the history club as well as the FSU chapter of Phi Alpha Theta, an honors history fraternity.  After graduating, she aspires to be a museum curator, librarian, or park ranger.  Her focus lies in American history which explains her penchant for exploration both within and beyond the United States.
Wilson is considerably well traveled within the country and speaks particularly fondly of Utah.  She describes it as an area of rich history (particularly Native American), a highly active lifestyle, and diverse food options.  Specifically, she recalls her experience of eating a bison burger for the first time, the meat of which has a naturally occurring and very enjoyable sage flavor.  During high school, soccer was Wilson’s passion, but a number of injuries including four torn ACLs rendered her unable to play; despite her bad knees, however, she took advantage of the opportunity to enjoy Utah’s abundant outdoor life, especially hiking.  “It’s a different world,” she says, claiming the mountains of Utah make the Appalachians look like meager hills.

Wilson’s travels have not been restricted to Utah, however; she has also spent considerable time northward in states such as New Hampshire, Vermont, New York, Maine, and New Jersey.  When asked her impression of the New England region, she happily replied, “Vermont is kind of granola,” in reference to the hippie lifestyle of living off the land shared by many of its inhabitants, a subculture with which she identifies to a degree.  She also spent time in Ireland as well as the UK countries of Wales, England, and Scotland.  Wilson chose to opt out of the typical “senior week” in Ocean City to make her UK and Ireland trip, whose culture was more her style. “I’m an Anglophile,” she says with a laugh. “Anything British I need to know about.”

Wilson is certainly a cultured young woman, a quality many her age lack.  Surely she will be going on to great things and even greater places, undoubtedly learning more history each step along the way.

Katie McCartney Can Do It All

Katie McCartney Can Do It All
By Harry Lichtman, ENGL 336

Katie McCartney was born in Annapolis, MD. Her family has always lived in Maryland. She has an older brother, J.R., who is 23 years old. McCartney is a senior at Frostburg State University. She is also a Mass Communication major, but was originally a Theater major because she was in theater in High School. She took on a bunch of minors that piqued her interest: Journalism, Marketing, and Events Planning. She can regularly be seen on campus with her friend Sam Metz and her Sorority sisters, or other friends of hers.

One subject in the journalism category that McCartney has a big interest in is photography. McCartney’s father got her into photography. “When I was younger, my dad would let me play with his Canon camera with film in it,” she said. McCartney eventually got her own camera for Christmas. She got a digital point and shoot camera from her parents and would take pictures of everything.

McCartney also said that she takes pictures with her smartphone nowadays, using apps like Instagram, for example. Now she has a Canon EOS Rebel T3i camera. McCartney loves using her new camera, “It is really nice," she said, "I love taking pictures with it of my friend Sam and my Sorority sisters.” She also takes pictures of nature with her Canon.

McCartney also likes writing, film, and media. But besides photography being a big interest, she also likes reading. Her favorite book is Pride & Prejudice by Jane Austen, who is also her favorite author. McCartney went to the library a lot when she was younger. "My dad would take me to the library and I would get 5 books and read them in a week," she explained. McCartney likes to read fantasy books like Twilight. Harry Potter is also one of her favorite books. Her reading as a kid sparked interest in science fiction as an adult.

In March 2016, McCartney is going to Uganda for the President's Leadership Circle. 12 seniors including her went through a lengthy interview service. 30 people out of the whole senior class applied, while only 12 people were selected. It is safe to say that Katie McCartney is a multi-talented woman. She can do it all!

Wesley Miller: A Character of His Own

Wesley Miller is a Garrett County resident and Junior here at Frostburg State University. Lover of all things gaming and music, his interests include playing the guitar, going to see local bands perform, and of course gaming. He is an English major and specifically loves creative writing because, as he says, “Creative writing speaks to the heart.” Miller spoke little of his family. His mother passed away when he was three years old, leaving his father widowed, going to college, working, and raising the kids on his own. As soon as he was old enough and got a car he said he was gone.

Wesley Miller in 2013
By just speaking to Miller you can tell his passion for creativity and imagination. He spoke of his love for gaming, claiming that his favorites were Dragon Age: Inquisition, Fallout 3, and Star Ocean Til the End of Time, and when he did his voice got louder, his posture became more confident, and he face just lit up. He plays Magic, a card game, a lot, but does not enjoy it as much anymore because he went to some gatherings where he met other people who play the game and he said they were “Spiteful, stereotypical nerds with glasses, boyles, and bad attitudes.” He spoke of his travels all up and down the east coast: Boston, New York, Ohio, Florida, South Carolina, and Kentucky. He specifically spoke about his experiences in Boston where he attended the Boston Penny Arcade Expo East at the Boston Convention Exhibition Center. At this gaming expo he experienced a huge room full of tabletop games that most people have never hear of, panels of game developers, and tons of cosplay. His favorite discussion panel was with a game developer of Bioware 2, a game with a very controversial ending. There was a room full of people divided mostly in half of those who thought the ending was the most epic thing ever and those who thought “how could you?” He said that he thoroughly enjoyed this discussion panel because is was funny to see “people compelled by something that didn’t really matter.”
Wesley Miller is a creative soul with a character all his own. His passion for creativity and imagination is inspirational. You can find out more about the Boston Penny Arcade Expo East and maybe even create your own adventure here.

Niki Folk: "Though she be little, she is fierce"

The Age of Aquarius refers to the advent of the new age movement in the 1960s and 1970s, but on a more abstract level, the Age of Aquarius can simply refer to something (or someone) that is fresh, vibrant, and new. Niki Lynn Folk is a 21 year old senior with a professional writing major at Frostburg State University. A small town girl with a bubbly and peppy personality born on January 21st under the Aquarius moon, Niki Folk is quite the breath of fresh air that we could all use once in a while.

Folk grew up in Frostburg Maryland where she now goes to school. Although Folk was raised in a small town, her dreams and aspirations reach hefty heights. Folk got her first taste of the exciting and effervescent city life, as well as the freedom and autonomy of college during her senior year of high school when she attended a journalism conference in the greatly esteemed Ivy League college, Columbia University in Manhattan, the booming heart of New York City. Folk says, “I remember feeling like I was already a college student, you got to go from class to class and it’s kind of like a taste of freedom before you really have it.” The dichotomy between country and city life, Frostburg and NYC specifically can be very startling, but Folk was able to easily assimilate into the fast paced life style of a city. On a recent trip to Philadelphia with friends, Folk found herself once again immersed into city life and enjoying it very much. She says’ “I like to go out and experience things, I like being stimulated and having things to do…by the second day in Phili my friends were ready to go home but I wanted to stay.” The way Folk regards city life after living in a small town all of her life, one could only wonder what her future living plans are, whether she plans to stay in a small town or veer out into a city. Folk is aware that there aren’t many opportunities economically in Frostburg especially in her major, and although her desire for stimulation  attracts her to larger towns, she still isn’t sure about living in one: “I could see myself living in NYC but realistically I’m not sure…I’m so used to the life I live, I’m thankful for my humble upbringing.”

One of Folk’s biggest passions is movies. From mystery to romance, to psychological thrillers, Folk enjoys watching movies, talking about movies and researching movies. That’s right, researching movies. IMDB is a website that gives users information about any and every movie (most movies). Info such as each actor who played in the movie, to director and production information, and more are all available on the website. IMDB is one of Folk’s favorite websites and whenever she watches a movie she looks up all the features and facets of that movie. Ironically, folk has never seen a Harry Potter movie which tends to baffle some, but Folk says “I know its shocking but I like to use this analogy, there’s a harry potter train that most individuals get on when they are children and they stay on, but other people miss the train and I missed it." Fair enough Niki, fair enough.

“Though she be little she is fierce.” This quote from William Shakespeare’s a Midsummer Night’s Dream is one that Folk greatly resonates with. On the exterior Folk is small, blond, and extremely cute which often leads to some unfair stereotypes: “I get stereotyped as the dumb blond, people think I’m going to be mean right off the bat, but I’m actually very friendly and I like to chat. I’m that girl you see at the bar and I’m like ‘Hi how are you?!’ and then I never stop talking." Folk has an infectious smile, voice and laugh and a warm heart. Like most, folk was once a shy individual but today she knows her worth and how splendid she is, and she emits her friendly spirits towards others whenever she can. “When i'm friendly to people and wave and they don’t wave back it doesn’t really bother me anymore because I know it is more of a reflection of them and not me.” And that is exactly true.

Niki Lynn folk is a small town girl with big dreams and an even bigger love for movies. Born under the Aquarius moon it’s no wonder she is such a kind and free spirit. We could definitely use more folks like Folk in this world!

Joel Russ: Chasing the Dream Through Sports and Social Media Madness

Joel Russ: Chasing the Dream Through Sports and Social Media Madness
By Katie O'Neill, ENGL 336

Sitting in the back corner of his classroom, plugging discreetly away at his cell phone, Joel Russ sends off one of his many tweets for the day. The 19 year old sophomore at Frostburg State University, and first generation student, stays busy enough to love napping in his limited free-time.

Joel Russ, Sophomore and major sports fan.
The seeming social media addict uses Twitter and Facebook for far more than just uploading selfies. After spending a summer writing over five articles a week for SEN (Sports Entertainment Network), Russ stayed on to be a local scout. He watches highlight tapes and ranks the players, a majority of whom are high school students.

As if one internship was not enough, Russ then joined the Rivals  ranks as the controller for their social media. All day every day, Russ updates Twitter with news regarding college sports and the many players of CFB and CBB (college football and baseball). The recruitment website relies on Russ to get word out about the college sports teams and their star players.

Russ's dedication to sports shines through in his hobbies, too. A monumental Yankees and Lakers fan, Russ spends much of his time following the scoreboard. Outside the realm of professional sports, the University of Southern Carolina Trojans (USC) are a major focus for Russ. He hopes to be a college football analyst after graduating from FSU, so keeping up to date on college football is a must.

To further his experience in sports writing and analysis, Russ now writes for FSU's student run newspaper, The Bottom Line, as a sports writer.

More than just working towards the future, though, Russ really loves the USC Trojans. "If they lose," he says, "I don't want people texting me. I turn off my phone."

Russ is dedicated beyond just loving sports. He knows what he wants from life, and he spends his days working on getting there: "I want to do what I love doing, so being an analyst for college football if a major goal," Russ says, hand on his over-worked cell phone.

There is not much room for a huge social life, but Russ, being a people person, knows that people make him just as happy as sports do. When the day is done, and the work week over, Russ takes time away from resting up to catch up with friends.

Although Joel Russ stays busy, he loves it: "I read sports, I write sports... I love sports," he says. Russ knows what he wants from life, and he will do whatever it takes to get there.

Katie O’Neill: The Power of Words

Katie O’Neill: The Power of Words
By Joel Russ, ENGL 336

Katie O’Neill was born 21 years ago in a small town in Cecil County, Maryland called Elkton. She is the oldest child with 2 younger sisters who might as well be called her best friends. O’Neill came from a fascinating but “crazy background” where her parents decided to get married after just 4 weeks of knowing each other. O’Neill is a small town girl that loves her family more then anything and they are a huge reason why she is currently pursuing a career in English.

English and the use of words intrigued O’Neill after spending most if not all of her childhood reading books. In first grade she spent most of her time writing about how much she wanted a cat as a result of that her parents decided to get her a cat one Christmas. To O’Neill her parents getting her a cat was because of “the power of words”.

O’Neill started college as a psychology major but her love for books and words led her back to English. O’Neill could not get over her love for English, most importantly writing because she felt like there was so much she could do as a writer as far as making a difference.

O’Neill said that through writing you can “take someones story and really put it out there and get people to understand the person you are interviewing; give different perspectives, open up doors for people and I just think that there is a lot of power in words.”

In hopes for achieving her career goals of being involved with web content management, O’Neill interned last semester with a small not for profit company called Poets at Work. In her own words, her time there was spent “helping unify poets and writers globally through writing contests and retreats.”

While on her internship O’Neill did a lot of writing for a writing retreat that took place in Tuscany, Italy. O’Neill felt like because of common interest she was able to help unify different writers from all over the world through her internship. Working with so many foreign writers was fascinating especially the different writing styles. O’Neill will look to learn from this experience and continue to develop as a writer.

Shes currently a sex ed. beat reporter for "The Bottom Line". She also a blogger for www.Sexlovewords.blogspot.com.

Finding Franchesca

Finding Franchesca: She Was Never Lost
By Megan Alvarez ENGL 336

Wise beyond her years is the impression 22 year old Franchesca Garland leaves after having a simple conversation with her. At the age of 14 the Baltimore native began the cosmetology program at Sollers Point Technical High School, and by the time she was 17 she had earned her cosmetology license. It was this vocational education that led a 16 year old Garland to obtaining a job working for the Aveda cosmetology company, a company that she later fell in love with and helped led her to where she is today.

Due to entering the professional work force at such a young age, Garland was left with more money than she knew to do with, so she began using her earnings to visit friends at other universities, which led her to her interest in attending Frostburg State University. The 3 years spent with Aveda got Garland interested in selling and promoting so much so that when she came to FSU she declared her major in Mass Communication with a double minor in Public Relations and Marketing.

Garland believes "College in general is the best opportunity for any person, it gets you to push your limits," which is why she decided to let go of her career in cosmetology and pursue what Frostburg had to offer her. But as it turns out, Garland had much more to offer Frostburg. Garland is an active member of the Marketing Club and has been a Freshman Orientation Peer Mentor for three semesters now because she feels this is her way to give back to the community. Garland further elaborated by taking the liberty to say, "I really enjoy the impact Frostburg has given me, so I just want to pay it forward," which is why she still continues to impact the campus even as a upperclassmen. Recently Garland joined the service fraternity Alpha Phi Omega, further proving that it is not too late to make a difference.

A firm believer that “it is important to travel and not vacation," Garland spent the Spring 2015 semester studying abroad in England and analyzing each culture. After her semester abroad, Garland created a blog called Finding Franchesca in order to educate others on what she has learned because she believes “people help people.”

In a time of self discovery Garland was able to take her experiences to become a better person, which is why she ended the conversation with the anonymous quote “your hands are empty until you learn to touch a soul.”
Franchesca Garland stands proud of her accomplishments on Frostburg State University's campus
