A Time to Make a
Change

It has been
said that it is never too late to make a change. Life gives many opportunities
to change what has felt stagnant. Soft spoken, Megan Alvarez, decided to change her
outlook on life when her and her older sister had a conversation about
Frostburg State University. As a teen, Alvarez was not in the social light. She
explained that high school was a repetitive cycle, as her routine did not
change from day to day. “In high school I
didn't have a life", says Alvarez. "I felt like I was uninvolved. No clubs, no athletics. I went to school and came
home”.
Older sister, Brittany (23), a Frostburg State University Alum
explained the benefits of college. Alverez took her advice and accepted a spot
in the freshman class of 2017. “If I
didn't go to college, I wouldn't go anywhere in life”, says a very stern
Alvarez.
Her body position changed and it was clear that this was her epiphany.
This was the moment that she decided to reinvent a “better Megan”. Shortly
after Alvarez speaks about how college is going to be a time where she made
renovations in her social and academic life. Alvarez says, “College is going to be different. I'm going to make the change”.
Transitioning from high school to college is difficult for any
student, however Alvarez was inspiring as her voice radiated passion speaking on what she envisioned during her time in college.“In all honesty I didn’t have a whole bunch
of friends in high school", says Alvarez. "I kind of just floated around. I didn’t have a
clique”. It was
clear that change was on its way.
It has been
four years since Alvarez received her acceptance letter from Frostburg State
University. Since then, Alvarez spoke her moment of clarity into existence and
made the change. At 20, she is now very involved on the campus of Frostburg
State University. She is an active member in organizations such as; Alpha Sigma
Alpha (social sorority), Phi Eta Sigma (honors fraternity), Sigma Tau Delta
(English Fraternity), Frostburg’s University Programming Council, and was the
President of the College Pan-Hellenic Council. Of course there are many
obstacles that Alvarez encountered during her journey to a better self, however
there is no doubt that Alvarez lacks any self motivation. From a timid
introvert to a well respected extravert, Alvarez has made the change. Whether
it be in college, in her career or future accomplishments, her journey to be
the change will continue.
