Sam Metz Turned Her Dreams Into Reality
By: Carolyne Jonas, ENGL 336

Sam Metz is currently a senior at Frostburg State University who will be graduating May of 2016. Her major is English with a concentration in literature, as well as a minor in Psychology. Metz plans on continuing her education by applying for Frostburg’s 18 month teaching program in hopes of landing a teaching position when she finishes graduate school.
Metz’ passion for teaching all started her 5th grade years, but her 9th, 10th, and 12th grade English teacher, Mrs. Elkins at Williamsport High, inspired her to follow her dreams. “[Mrs. Elkins] was very strict, but really helped me learn what I would need to learn and do to become a successful English teacher in the future.” Metz laughed, shrugging her shoulders. “I plan on taking her job.” Sam Metz also wants to help students when life gets rough and “I want my students to be ready for college” as much as she was when she applied.
Though she is an English fanatic, Metz’ minor is resulted by interest. She loves learning of the human brain and how easily it can be influenced. When faced with the question of why not teaching or finding a job involving psychology, she stated that the only job she would want to do is be a guidance counselor. She likes to be surrounded by people, human interaction, and her true passion is in English. She aspires to live life enclosed of literature and she is well connected to people, activities, and technology as she repeatedly checked her phone for updates of social media and text messages.
Sam Metz loves everything and all things English. She hopes to one day travel to England to visit Shakespeare’s tombstone. Sam then says in a British accent, “I want fish and chips and green tea.” Metz’ over all positive attitude is contagious throughout the discussion and was sustained when she said how she wanted to pour wine on Edgar Allan Poe’s grave.
Metz is a kind, well-rounded individual who would help anyone in their time of need. Her passion for teaching is extremely noticeable, making it easy to see her as another teacher who inspires future students to follow their dreams as well.
