Harry Lichtman: ESPN here he comes
By Katie McCartney, ENGL 336
Harry Lichtman is a sophomore mass communication major at Frostburg State University. Lichtman regularly be seen walking around campus in his Redskins t-shirts, going from class to class, and stopping to greet all of his friends with a smile. Lichtman grew up in Potomac, MD with his parents and older sister, Celia, a recent graduate of Frostburg.
From a young age, Lichtman has been passionate about all sports. His parents have been Redskins football fans since before he was born. Growing up, he followed in his family’s footsteps. Watching football was one of his family’s main sources of bonding.  “My parents got me into football. I enjoyed watching it. It was really exciting… I especially like watching with my mom.” His whole family is passionate about DC local sports including Nationals baseball, Capitals hockey, and Wizards basketball.
Lichtman grew more passionate about sports the older he got. Throughout high school, he became involved with JV football and lacrosse, as well as varsity lacrosse. He started out playing JV lacrosse his freshman year, then moved to helping manage the team. He helped manage JV and varsity lacrosse, as well as JV football. Through this experience, he learned how to calculate stats for different sports.
Last summer, Lichtman and his family went to Redskins training camp. “I watched the Redskins practice with the New England Patriots… I got autographs from the players and got to take a selfie with an ESPN reporter.” Being such a big Redskins fan, Lichtman was a very excited to be able to see his team in action. Lichtman got to meet Robert Griffin III, also known as RG III, the quarterback for the Redskins. He also got to see Tom Brady, the three time Super Bowl champion quarterback.
Lichtman’s love of sports has influenced his decisions for his future. He is currently studying mass communications interested in pursuing sports reporting. He would like to either work in broadcast or writing. When discussing possible careers, Lichtman said he admired a sports broadcaster he grew up watching. “One sportscaster I’ve looked up to most of my life is Chris Burman from ESPN. He does highlights for NFL games.” Maybe in the future, we will see Harry Lichtman as the next ESPN NFL reporter.
