Breaking
the Off Campus Myth:
An
Interview of Elizabeth Ahn.
By
Robert Higham, ENGL 336
Elizabeth Ahn is a Sorority.
Coming from Montgomery County Maryland, she studies Liberal Arts here at
Frostburg State University in hopes of joining the MAT program to become a teacher.
She enjoys That 70’s Show and Sex in the City as her current favorite obsessions.
Elizabeth is also an avid reader, her favorite book being Jodi Picoult’s
Vanishing Act.
So
why do this whole introduction piece? Why break in with the small talk? Simple,
had you not read this title you would not have believed her to be any other
student. Elizabeth Ahn is a member of Kappa Delta Gamma, an off campus
Sorority, as with most off campus Greek life they have a reputation for being
poor or doing things they shouldn’t, but Elizabeth would say otherwise.
“Relay
for Life was the largest event for us, but two years ago they (Campus Administration)
closed off the event to off campus sorority and fraternities.” Says Elizabeth “This
really ruins the whole idea of Relay for Life.” That isn’t much further from
the truth. Relay for Life is one of the few charity events that Kappa Delta
Gamma participates in, while Elizabeth claims that they work for other
charities it is clear that being shut out Relay for Life, hosted by Frostburg
State University, was a major loss for her organization.
Relay
for Life is an organization based on finding a cure for cancer, it’s a time for
a community to come together to achieve a single goal and by excluding a part
of that community you have removed a helping hand to that cause. Why would a
university do this? Simple a tarnished reputation, off Campus is seen as a horrifying
blot on the history of Frostburg State University. As a closing remark
Elizabeth Ahn made it very clear that “We are not seeking to become an on
campus Sorority.”
