David Carter’s Summer Adventures

David Carter’s Summer Adventures
By Alexandra Davis, ENGL 336

Easy going David Carter spent this past summer as a construction worker, a cook, and a cashier. David worked as a cashier and a cook at a restaurant called Wing Stop. In his construction job he cleaned out apartments. David carried out old appliances such as refrigerators and stoves and then installed new ones. Working in construction was David’s least favorite summer job.

The Prince George’s county native grew up in Bowie, Maryland. Growing up in Bowie he was twenty minutes outside of DC, twenty minutes from Annapolis, or in his words, “I’m twenty minutes from everything.” The rural area of Frostburg State is definitely the opposite of the city lifestyle in which David grew up. “You can tell by the commercials,” David states when explaining how seeing farms and tractors are so common in commercials and around the area of Frostburg.

The 19-year-old sophomore is a Mass Communications major with a minor in Journalism. David started out as a Mass Communications major because he originally wanted to be a sports analyst or a sports broadcaster. He is also interested in photography, graphic design, and journalism. David is open to whatever job opportunities come his way in the future, as he is not set on a particular career. However, if he had to pick a dream job it would be working for ESPN.

David grew up going on vacations to different beaches across the east coast. This past summer he spent a week vacationing in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He remarked, “Wouldn’t want to live there because Puerto Rico just isn’t home. It’s really nice but it’s different. I would definitely go back.” David spent the week exploring rainforests, waterfalls, beaches, and eating at the local restaurants. His favorite restaurant was El Jibarito where he ate Mofongo. Monfongo is a dish that contains deep-fried green plantains which are mashed together with other ingredients such as seafood or pork. He talked about how he went on a thirty-minute walk one day to visit a waterfall. He said that if he kept walking on the trail past the waterfall, there is a spot so high that he could have actually been above the clouds.

David Carter was a construction worker, a cook, and a cashier this summer but most of all he enjoyed his time in Puerto Rico.
